Have you ever wondered how many ties Mr. Planansky has? I sure have, so I asked! In fact, I did an entire interview on him for the website. He said that he has never really counted them all before, but he thinks that he probably has between five and seven hundred ties.
Mr. Planansky attended both elementary and high school in Hemingford, Nebraska. In high school he participated in football, basketball, track, play production, yearbook, and National Honor Society. He then went to college at Chadron State College for 6 years. He has been a teacher for 40 years! He has taught at many different schools over the years. These schools include Chadron, Hemingford, Alliance, Hay Springs, and he has even taught in Scotland for a year! He is a third generation teacher, both his mother and grandmother were teachers. Mr. Planansky said that the reason that he became a teacher is “Poverty, (laughing) I was too poor to become an engineer.”
Mr. Planansky was a teacher in Scotland in a town called Peebles, which is located about 30 miles South of Edinbourgh. He did this because he was in something called Fulbright, which is a teacher exchange program. He traded jobs, homes, and cars with a Scottish teacher.
Mr. Planansky says that he does indeed like his job. He says that he has an enjoyable time teaching all kids, as long as the students are willing to learn. He does not have a favorite class that he has taught, but he says he has taught classes in which majority of the students were not wanting to be there and did not want to learn (I was asked to say that this didn’t happen at Hay Springs). Mr. Planasky told me “Being a teacher has changed over the years. He said that your classroom used to be your kingdom, and no one questioned your methods or materials, and now with no child left behind it seems like teachers spend more time testing and working with standards than is spent actually teaching. I like the way that it used to be more than the way that it seems to be becoming.”
A childhood dream of Mr. Planansky’s was to be either Superman or Elastic Man, but he said that he just had to settle for Superman. Mr. Planansky wanted readers to know that he has a dog named Pepic and also a wife named Kay. Some advice that Murph had to offer us is that teaching is a rewarding profession…you won’t get rich. You can’t take it with you, but you will leave a lot behind.
Most definitely many people would agree that Mr. Planansky is a very interesting person. I would like to give a HUMONGOUS thank you to Mr. Planansky for his time and effort on allowing me to interview him.

I chose to interview Mrs. Weisler because she is new to the community of Hay Springs, and to the school, also because I do not know very much about her. Mrs. Wiesler: “My math or algebra 1 teacher my freshman year. She had a way with teaching that made me realize how much I liked doing math. She made math fun.” Me: Where did you go to high school? Mrs. Wiesler: “I went to high school in Miller, South Dakota, where I grew up.” Me: What is your goal for this year? Mrs. Wiesler: “My goal for this year is to get to know my students and their families. Also to get to know more people in the community.” Me: What is the most challenging thing in life that you have come across so far? Mrs. Wiesler: “I would have to say that the most challenging thing that I have come across in life so far would have to be maintaining a good balance between work, family, and fun. And also, remaining stress free!” Me: What have you enjoyed the most so far about being a teacher? Mrs. Wiesler: “I have enjoyed getting to know the students , and asking them about their daily lives and what they are all about.” Me: What is your favorite food? Mrs. Wiesler: “Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo would have to be my favorite food.”

Mr. Olson has been teaching for 39 years and still enjoys it as much as the first day. He still thinks there’s good students so he keeps teaching.
Mr. Olson has been teaching since the fall of 1970. He took a year off to finish a government project that he and his brother started. Later he took a half year off to start retirement. He teaches ITE because he always enjoyed building and has been around construction his whole life. He enjoys teaching because there are still good students in this neck of the woods.
ITE is interesting for the fact that there’s new challenges all the time, it changes constantly. “I had been teaching a number of years when in my Industrial Magazine people were talking about computers, hadn’t even built them yet and now look at what we have,” stated Mr. Olson.
He started teaching here by a stroke of luck. He was down at the post office when the superintendent said there was an opening so he applied and got the job. He had just graduated and the old teacher had quit.
Mr. Olson has been teaching for many years and we would like to see him in years to come. He would also like to say that some of his students are selling cabinets at the Soup and Pie Supper on December 11th.
