Hawks Split At Highway 20 Tourney

The Hawks boys basketball team split a pair of games on Friday and Saturday nights at the Highway 20 tournament held at Hay Springs. Friday, the boys opened the tournament against the Crawford Rams. After a close first quarter, the Hawks exploded for 22 points in the second quarter to lead 33-15 at the half. The two teams played closer in the second half with the Hawks still outscoring the Rams 21-14 for a final 54-29 Hawks victory. The Hawks got a double, double from Jake P. who finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Isaac H. led the Hawks scorers with 20. Darrick H. led the Rams with 12.
On Saturday night the Hawks met up with the Cody-Kilgore Cowboys in the championship game. The Cowboys advanced to the championship game with an 81-38 win over the Sioux County Warriors. The Cowboys jumped out to an early 11-4 first quarter lead, but the Hawks bounced back to outscore the Cowboys in the second 15-13 to close the gap to 5 at the break, 24-19. The Cowboys started more quickly out of the lockerroom to build a 10 point third quarter advantage. The Hawks refused to go away in the fourth quarter fighting to the buzzer before dropping a disappointing two point defeat 52-50 at the hands of the Cowboys. Jake P. paced the Hawks with 21 points. Isaac H. added 10. The Cowboys were led by Landon Miller who finished with 22. Kyle M. also finished in double figures with 14.
The Hawks will be back in action on Friday at Gordon. Tipoff for girls varsity action is set for 6:00 p.m.

The Gordon-Rushville Mustangs used a strong third quarter to pull away from the Hawks of Hay Springs Friday night and take the 45-33 victory. The Mustangs led by just two points at the end of the first quarter 11-9 and outscored the Hawks 13-10 in the second quarter to lead by 5 at the half 24-19. It was a strong third quarter by the Mustangs that allowed them to build a twelve point lead heading into the final stanza. The Hawks were led by Jake P. who finished with a game high 17 points. He also added 9 rebounds. Isaac H. added 12 points and 7 rebounds. The Mustangs had two players in double figures, led by Rick M. with 13. Taylor F. added 10.
The Hawks will host the Cowboys of Cody-Kilgore on Saturday.

Hawks Win Conference Championship

The #1 seeded Hawks basketball team won the Panhandle Conference Tournament Championship Saturday night in Crawford defeating the Edgemont Moguls in the second round, and Hemingford in the championship. The Hawks opened the tournament with the Edgemont Moguls, who had defeated the Sioux County Warriors in the play-in game. The Hawks jumped out to a 14-7 first quarter lead behind the strength of 9 points from Lars B. Five Hawks scored in the second quarter to give the Hawks a 27-18 lead at the half. A good third quarter by the Moguls allowed them to pull within 5, 40-35, but some tough defensive pressure by the Hawks in the fourth helped them stretch the winning margin to 14, 55-41. The Hawks put two players in double figures led by Jake P. with 15. Lars B. added 12.
In the Championship game, the Hawks raced out to a 26-8 first quarter lead and held a 19 point advantage at the break, 39-20. The Hawks continued to stay hot in the third and fourth quarters building on their lead. The Hawks outscored the Cats by one in the third, and six in the fourth to take a convincing 65-39 win and the Hawks first conference title since 2003. Nine of the Hawks’ twelve players scored in the game, led by Isaac H. with 18. Jake P. added a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds and Lars B. finished with 10.
The Hawks hope to continue their winning streak when they travel to Sioux County on Friday.

Hawks Keep Rolling

The Hawks kept their eight game win streak alive last week by downing the Crawford Rams on Tuesday night 50-29 and the Edgemont Moguls Saturday night 80-56. The Hawks started quickly against the first quarter lead but the teams scored just six points each in the second quarter for a 24-14 Hawks lead. In the third quarter the Hawks put some space between themselves and the Rams by outscoring them 16-5 in the quarter.
The teams matched each other again in the fourth quarter each scoring 10 points. The Hawks were led by Jake P. who finished with a double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Lars B. finished with 16 points. Darrick H. led the Rams with 13.
After a close first half against the Edgemont Moguls the Hawks used a strong second half to blow past the Moguls 80-56. The Hawks held a slim four point advantage 16-12 at the end of the first quarter and a five point lead at half 32-27. In the second half the Hawks scored 22 and 26 points in the third and fourth quarters while holding the Moguls to 29 in the half.
Four players finished in double players for the Hawks led by Jake with 18. Isaac H. added 15 and Travis K. and Lars 14 points each. Lars led the Hawks in rebounds with 8. The Moguls finished with three players in double figures led by Arron M. with 17. Josh B. and Tyler S. finished with 15 and 11 points respectively.
The Hawks record now stands at 12-4. They will hit the road this week for games against Garden County and Hemingford.
