Hay Springs Hawks Cross Country

Final Run of The Season

The Hawks Cross Country team had their last meet in Grant, Nebraska on October 15. At the meet Jerilyn ran an 18:10 and placed 18th. Bri ran a 21 flat. To place for state they had to qualify in the top 15, of which Jerilyn fell just short. Both girls made major improvements from last year in their running. Jerilyn and Coach Mandelko will both miss Bri very much next year for she graduates in May. Congratulations to both girls for a successful season. We wish you much luck in the future with your running.

Making Improvements

Again, The Hawk Cross Country Runners improved in Alliance, last Saturday, September 19. The running time for Jerilyn S. was 18:02. Her last year’s time was 19:36. The running time for Bri L. was 21:43 and her time last year’s time is the same. I talked to Mrs.Mandelko and asked what she thought of the meet , and she quoted “They both improved time and that is our goal this year! We would like to thank Berlee, Karla Letcher, and the Scherbarth family for coming and supporting us in Alliance.”
Their next meet will take place in Gordon-Rushville on September 24.

Improvement

The cross country team was at Chadron last Friday, September 11, 2009. Bri L. and Jerilyn S. were the only two runners. Bri L. time was 20.50 and Jerilyn’s was 17.26. They both improved! Congratulations for doing an AWESOME job! The next meet is Saturday the 19th at Alliance

Run Run Run

Jerilyn is showing off her mighty muscles. Mrs. Mandelko is pretty impressed!

Jerilyn and Bri lookin' good!

Run,run Lady Hawks! The crowd yells as the cross country team jogs by. So what exactly is cross county? The exact definition of cross country is: “moving or directed across open country rather than following tracks, roads, or runs.” For normal people like you and me here is an easier definition. Cross country is basically a race. Officials set out a course that is a certain distance. For girls it is a 4-K or 2.5 miles, and for boys it is a 5-K or 3.1 miles.

Our cross country team consists of two members and a coach. Bri L. and Jerilyn S. are the two members and the coach is Mrs. Mandelko. At the meet on Friday, September 4, 2009, both girls improved their times from last year. Bri L. ran it in 23 minutes flat last year and improved her time by 20 seconds this year. Jerilyn ran it in 19.04 last year and improved it by 30 seconds. The next meet is today, Friday, September 11, 2009 in Chadron. Good luck runners!
