Lady Hawks Open Season 1-1

The Lady Hawks opened the roundball season this weekend with a win over the Crawford Lady Rams and a loss to the Sioux County Lady Warriors. The Lady Hawks opened the Highway 20 tournament on Friday with a 75-22 win over the Lady Rams. The Hawks started quickly, opening up a 17-2 first quarter lead and a 36-13 halftime lead. The Lady Hawks continued to expand their lead in the second half holding the Rams to just 9 second half points while scoring 39 of their own. All eleven of the Lady Hawks suited players scored at least four points, and were led in scoring by Brenna J. with 12. Haley S. led the Lady Rams with 9.
In the championship game the Lady Hawks met up with the Sioux County Lady Warriors. The Lady Warriors advanced to the championship game with a Friday afternoon win over the Cody-Kilgore Cowgirls. Sioux County used a pestering press in the first quarter to jump out to a 17-8 first quarter lead. The Lady Hawks trimmed Sioux County's lead by 2 in the second quarter to by outscoring them 12-10 to trail 27-20 at the half. The teams played even in the third quarter but Sioux County sealed the victory with freethrows in the fourth quarter taking the 51-38 victory. Brenna J. led the Hawks with 9. The Lady Warriors put three players in double figures, led by Liz E. with 17. April S. and Jackie W. added 15 and 10 points respectively.
The Lady Hawks will take on the Lady Mustangs of Gordon/Rushville Friday night in Gordon. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m,.

The Lady Mustangs jumped out to an early ten point advantage in the first quarter Friday night on their home floor enroute to a 56-28 victory over the Lady Hawks of Hay Springs. Gordon-Rushville led 14-4 at the end of the first quarter and 27-13 at the break. The Lady Mustangs continued to cash in on the Hawks misfortunes in the second half extending their lead in each of the final quarters. The Hawks were led in scoring by Brenna J. with 10. Jeni B. led the Lady Mustangs with 11.

The Lady Hawks finished in second place in the Panhandle Conference
Tournament Friday and Saturday by defeating Hemingford in second round action and battling the Sioux County Lady Warriors in the finals. Friday afternoon the Lady Hawks trailed the Lady Cats 12-10 at the end of the first quarter, but exploded for 19 points in the second quarter, while holding Hemingford to just 2 points to take a 29-14 halftime lead. The Lady Cats battled back after the intermission outscoring the Lady Hawks 21-13 to pull within 7, 42-35 before the Lady Hawks used a tough defense to stifle the Lady Cats offense holding them to just 3 points in the fourth while putting up 18 points enroot to a 60-38 victory and a trip to the championship game. Leading the Hawks against Hemingford was Brenna J. with 23. Steph K. Trisha K. finished with 12 and 10 points respectively.
In the championship game Saturday night, the Lady Hawks found themselves in a big hole at halftime, trailing by 16, 30-14. The Lady Hawks never gave u however using a tough press to work their way back into the ball game. The Hawks outscored Sioux County 15-8 in the third quarter to close the gap to 9, 38-29 and pulled within 1 point in the fourth quarter before crucial free throws by the Lady Warriors sealed the victory 49-45, and Sioux County's second straight conference title. The Lady Hawks were led by Trisha K. with 22 points. Brenna J. added 10.
The Lady Hawks will battle the Sioux County Warriors Friday in regular season play for the fourth time this season.
