Youth Volunteer over Christmas Break for Boys and Girls Club

“I like pulling up the sandy tile better than the tile that’s clean. It is so much easier” says Lindsey Livingston. Lindsey, along with her sister, Connie Livingston, Tate Eichenberger, Kate Orr and Jessica Palmer worked on Monday and Tuesday December 21st and 22nd to start the clean-up and renovation of a building that will house the Youth Center for the Boys and Girls Club of Sheridan County. The girls were joined by Gary Palmer and Dylan Michael at various times over the two days. The building is located at 107 Loofborrow Street in Rushville. It was donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Sheridan County by Ed Holstein and formerly housed the USDA Service Center. Tate Eichenberger is the daughter of Staca and Brad Eichenberger, Rushville. Connie and Lindsey Livingston are the daughters of Becky and John Haller, Rushville. Kate Orr is the daughter of Sandy and John Orr, Rushville. Dylan Michael is the son of Tracy Richards, Hay Springs. Jessica Palmer is the daughter of Wendy and Gary Palmer, Hay Springs.

By readying this building for use, the Boys and Girls Club steering committee is looking to provide the youth from across Sheridan County a place to go for fun and safe activities. “I am honestly looking forward to this idea. This will help our communities greatly, to keep our local kids busy, and having fun, while gaining leadership” commented Jessica Palmer following the two-day clean-up event. “We got a lot done over the past two days” Kate Orr commented “but there’s still a lot we need to do.” Stella Otte, a Boys and Girls Club committee member agreed with Kate’s comment, “We have a very nice building here that will be a nice place for the kids but we do have a lot more work to get it to where it’ll work for them.”

The Boys and Girls Club of Sheridan County is a unit of the Boys and Girls Club of the Nebraska Panhandle. Steering committee members are: Stella Otte, Sherry Retzlaff, Ed Bracken, Zach and Brittany Kearns, Kirk and Elsie Otte, Emilee and Rudy Reina, and Steve and Kathleen Willnerd. The committee formed in late 2009. The Committee’s goal is to have a teen center where activities will be available for high school and, eventually, junior high youth. “Rushville has a very good after school program for grades K through 6th, so we’re not looking to duplicate those efforts.” said Sherry Retzlaff “What we want to have with the youth center is a destination location for the older youth; a place where all of Sheridan County youth can go for fun, safe activities.” The Committee has quite a bit of work ahead of them to make the Youth Center a reality. The building needs things such as electrical updates, insulation and other fix-ups. To learn more about the Club or to volunteer your time and/or materials for this effort, please contact any Committee member. The Boys and Girls Club of Sheridan County is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, making all donations tax deductible.
