Teachers Become Certified in CPR & First Aid

On Thursday before school started, the faculty and staff of Hay Springs Schools were trained to become certified in CPR and First Aid. Mr. Ferguson, a volunteer for the Red Cross came up from Scottsbluff to conduct the training. The teachers had to perform CPR on adult dolls as well as baby dolls. The training lasted all day. Thanks to Mr. Ferguson for helping them.

Spanish Trip to Mexico

On May 19, 2007, a group of 18, made up of a variety of ages left for Mexico. Anyone who had taken Spanish, or currently was in the class, had the opportunity to go on this trip. This trip was organized by Mrs. Welch, the Spanish teacher at Hay Springs Schools.

When we arrived in Mexico City, we met with a group of 6, from inner city Chicago. Those students were traveling on the same tour and we stayed with them throughout the trip.

While in Mexico we got to see a lot of different things, including Teotihican, Chichen Itza, Mexico City, Cancun, Merida, Puebla, and many other exciting places. We stayed 9 nights and 10 days in Mexico. It was a great experience and this year Mrs. Welch is putting together a trip to Europe. Everyone should all look into this trip. It is a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

Homecoming Parade

This year, due to the loss of the cheerleaders, we will not be having a pep rally after Coronation. Instead, we are having a Homecoming Parade. Only shopping carts and wagons are allowed. You and your class will have to decorate a wagon or shopping cart to your liking. The parade will begin immediately after the coronation, which begins at 1:30. You will need to line up outside of the school to enter your float. Directions for the parade will be as follows: Down school hill, east on North 3rd, down Main St., make a U-turn at North 1st and come back up the hill. The winners of the contest will be announced at Half-Time of the Homecoming football game.

Homecoming

This year’s Homecoming theme is “Leave Nothing”. Homecoming is the week of the 25th. There is no school on that Monday so we are starting Tuesday off with Cowboy Day, Wednesday-Twin Day, Thursday-Opposite Sex Day, and Friday is the normal Hat and Jersey Day. Bonfire and hot dog feed Thursday night and Coronation on Friday at 1:30 and following is the Parade. Saturday night we will be having a dance. And now for the Homecoming candidates, Terry Bronson, Jake Pond, and Brad Piper for King and for Queen Katie Heiting, Brenna Jungck, and Jennifer Kirbey!

Cowboy Day

September 25, 2007, was cowboy day here at Hay Springs Public Schools. All the classes had a lot of kids dress up like cowboys and cowgirls. During lunch hour all the classes stood up in front of the students to show off their western attire. The faculty had some teachers that dressed up. Everyone that dressed up looked pretty tough wearing all the cowboy and cowgirl stuff. Come with your twin tomorrow for twin day.

Twin Day

Wednesday was twin day. There were a lot of different types of twins. We had army twins, cross dresser twins, Lola and Lulu twins, and a bunch of different ones. Keep up the good work with all your costumes. Don’t forget that Thursday is opposite sex day so come to school with your stylish girls or boys clothes on.

Opposite Sex Day

Opposite sex day was quite hilarious. We had a lot of cross dressers roaming around the school. We all had fun seeing the feminine side of the boys and the manly side of the girls. Come to school dressed up in HAWK SPIRIT tomorrow. Wear your best hat and your Hawk jersey if you have one.

The Spirit Stick Award

The Seniors with their shopping cart float.

The Freshman and Sophomore teams are ready for popcorn to be thrown at their peanut butter faces.

Carrie shows us her beautiful hair style that won her team points.

This year during homecoming there was a Spirit Stick award given out. The spirit stick award was given to the class that had the most points for certain events. Some of the events were how many people in their class dress up for that particular day, the class sponsors had to dress up also for that class to get points. Other ways that classes got points were by how they did at the fear factor games, how their parade float was, their class poster, and who cheered the loudest at the events. In 1st place this year was the senior class, in 2nd was the juniors, then the sophomores, and last but not least were the freshman.

Homecoming Bonfire

On Thursday night, we had our annual Burning of the “H.” It started off with motivational speeches from the coaches and the senior athletes, Lisa Hughes, Chad Morsette, Brenna J., Chasidy C., Terry B., and Kolton M. After the speeches, everyone did a few class cheers and then “Fear Factor” began.

To begin Fear Factor, the Outdoor Lovers were blindfolded and plates of worms were sat in front of them. They had to eat all of the worms the fastest to win. Jake P. won for the sophomores. The next challenge was for the “people best with kids,” and Hilary B. was the quickest to open up 3 diapers and determine what was in them. The seniors won next, whoever had the “best complexion” rubbed peanut butter all over their faces and the “best movie lover” stood back and tried to get the most popcorn stuck to their teammate’s faces that they could. The seniors had the best looking hair after putting shaving cream in it and designing a new “look.” Wacey pulled off a win for the freshman after sticking his head into a bucket of flour, finding a piece of gum, and blowing a bubble with it faster than any other class. Five members of each class were then asked to stand in a line and pass an egg through the whole line under their chins. The seniors won this competition also. Last, but not least, was the spaghetti toss. The seniors dominated again getting the most noodles into their teammate’s bucket.

The seniors won over-all in the Fear Factor Contest. They defeated the other classes in all but 3 of the 7 competitions.

2007 Homecoming Coronation

This year’s Homecoming coronation was Friday September 28th, at 1:30. Jennifer K. and Brad P. were named 2nd attendants, Katie H. and Terry B. were named 1st attendants, and Brenna J. and Jake P. were named this years Homecoming queen and king. The escorts were Carlyn E., J.W. S., Tanner L., Kinlee G., Breanne C., and Wacey S. the crownbearers were Jalei M. and Owen R. The MC was Mr. Olson and we all enjoyed hearing about his travels after he retired. Mandy Carlson was the entertainment; she sang “A Moment Like This”, and Lori Jensen was the pianist.

Dodgeball Tournament

"The Enforcers" -- The Champions

This year for homecoming we had our first annual dodge ball tournament. There were many teams competing. These teams included: The Enforcers, The Skins, The Scroungers, Balls of Fury, Jr. High Ballers, Shear Style, The Scrappers, and The Underdogs. The first night they played was Tuesday at 6pm. The games went on again Thursday night at 6pm during the hot dog feed that was hosted by the seniors. To make a long story short, the Enforcers went through the tournament undefeated and won the gold medal.

Homecoming Dance

The homecoming dance was a blast this year. There was a good turn out. There was a lot of dancers showing off there skills. I think everyone that joined had a rockin’ good time.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent teacher conferences will be held at the top of Lister Sage for grades 6-12. It will be from 3 pm to 8 pm. Grades K-5 are in ther rooms.

One Act

This year’s One Act Play was Amelia, Once More. Our first performance was Friday, November 16 at the high school auditorium. It was for the public since we didn’t perform for the school this year. Our first competition was for Panhandle Conference in Hemingford on November 19. The schools that attended and competed were Hemingford, Sioux County, Crawford, and Hay Springs. Hemingford got 1st, Hay Springs got 2nd, Crawford got 3rd, and Sioux County got 4th. Our next and last competition was Districts in North Platte on November 27. Since we’re in a different District this year, we had different schools in our Districts competition. The schools that attended were Maxwell, Banner County, Crawford, Wauneta-Palisade, Hitchcock County, Hays Center, Minatare, and Hay Springs. Maxwell got 1st, Banner County got 2nd, Crawford got 3rd, and Hay Springs got 4th. Sadly, we didn’t do as well as we had hoped but it was an awesome performance. We ended the season on a good note and again, maybe next year we can do better.
