A Banner Idea

Mr. Frank had the superb idea of purchasing banners to put on view in the Lister Sage Community Building, to recognize past accomplishment of the student body of Hay Springs High school. These banners will display State Qualifiers and Panhandle Conference Titles. You often see the banners exhibited in other schools. They are a nice thing to have to remember the students’ accomplishments. Mr. Frank is needing donations to purchase them….they cost $185 per banner. If you are kind enough to make a donation, then your name will be placed on a nice plaque, in appreciation of your kindness. If you are interested, then please contact either Karla or Mr. Frank at the school at 638-4434.

They're Baaaaaccckkkkk!!!

Oh My Gosh! Hay Springs is finally getting cheerleaders! We haven’t had cheerleaders in a long time. Well, like in three years! And now they are coming back.

Jen Wohl is the sponsor because she was a cheerleader when she was in high school and wants Hay Springs to have cheerleaders. They earned money for uniforms by working the concession stand and selling tickets for a 50/50 raffle. They are doing it because it’s nice to have someone pump up the crowd and encourage the boys! There are only 4 girls going out this year: Savannah, Kasey, Sherona and Jerilyn , but hopefully next year we have some more! We hope to get the uniforms by Panhandle Conference.

Now that HSHS Cheerleaders are back, we hope for your support in the future.

Adios See You in Costa Rica!!!

Mrs. Welch
How would you like to learn a different language? Well the Travel Club travels all over and they learn all kinds of ways to say hello. It is a cool club!
I interviewed Mrs. Welch who is the sponsor of the Travel Club. She takes kids from Hay Springs High School and Chardon High School traveling to all kinds of awesome places! They have gone to Mexico, London, Paris, and Rome. The next trip she is planning is to Costa Rica and there are 4 students from Hay Springs who are planning to go: Trisha and Kelsey K. , Jerilyn S. , and Kerisa M. 3 students from Chadron are also going. Mrs. Welch has been doing this since Spring of 2006.

The club does a lot of fundraising for the trip; they earn about ½ of it and the family pays the other ½. The Travel Club is very cool because you get to meet other students from different schools, and you get to see what the real world is really like! Mrs. Welch said “ Traveling changed my life. It is an incredible experience and opportunity to learn about yourself and the world.” You can learn new cultures and “face fun challenges and deal with them” says Mrs. Welch.

Thank you Mrs. Welch for running the club. I really enjoyed talking to you.

A Smelly Experience!

They were happy goats!
On the splendid morning of the final day of November 2009, the students and faculty of Hay Springs School had a few very out-of-the-ordinary guests. They were not your typical visitors, such as a guest speaker or something (although I’m very sure that that would have also been all right with many students…anything to get out of a little class). If you weren’t here, then I bet that you’ll never guess who or what our special guests were!
They were run-away goats! They escaped from their dwelling and made their get away to visit the students of Hay Springs School. I’m sure that it was an outlandish yet comical way to start off a lengthy day at school for many people. I was really curious about this, so I went and asked a few people who might have some interesting stories to tell about the whole goat ordeal.

First, I went and visited Mr. Pummel. He said that he never expected something like goats visiting us at school. He learned a lot of things about goats from the whole experience. These include that they really stink, they are aggressive, they poop when they get excited, they are very persistent, and they do not easily scare. Mr. Pummel said that the whole situation “added a little excitement.”

Next, I asked Mr. Frank to tell me about it. He said that he heard a page for someone to bring a broom downstairs, he then knew that we had a problem! I bet the janitor had an enjoyable time sweeping the poop off of the sidewalk!

Then, I went and talked to Mrs. Letcher. She said that her first reaction was that their beard thing freaked her out a little bit, since she has never seen goats before. She said that they were really stinky. She told me that I should go and talk to Daniel H. about it, he might have an interesting story.

Daniel H. really didn’t have too much to say, except that they followed him from his neighbor’s house, up the street, and to the front door of the school. He told me that he tried running to get rid of them, but they just chased after him. He does not think that they were trying to hurt him, they just wanted some attention, or a snack.

Most certainly, I think we all got a huge laugh out of the goats. Maybe sometime we could invite our hairy little friends to come visiting again!

Much Ado Rides Again

Claude

Ben

Pedro

“I love the smell of manure in the morning!” In the opening scene of the play Ben proclaims his love for the smell of cow poo as he returns home with his buddies from war. This year’s one act play is “Much Ado Out West.” It is the same play as the all school play from last year, except it has been cut down to meet One Act standards. The One Act standards are that it must not exceed 30 minutes and not be under 15 minutes. It also must have 3 or more cast members. If the play is over or under in time it is dropped down in ranking. 3 judges evaluate the play, and after performing the cast goes to a room, then they are critiqued by each judge, one by one. The crew’s job is to strike the set which must be done in a timely and neat fashion so that the next play may set up.
So what exactly is One Act? One act is essentially competitive acting. The team travels to other towns and performs their play. It is a distinct challenge for everyone involved and it also helps the students develop skills that they can use for the rest of their lives.
The cast members this year are: Dustin Lee, Kelsey Kudrna, Marcus Sandberg, Rachel Horrocks, Tanner Letcher, Wacey Schmid, Heath Lee and Tauna Letcher. The crew members are: Laurin Bronson, Zoe Schneider, Brook Scherbarth, Jake Palmer, Jessica Palmer, Kerisa Marx, Dylan Michael and Chris Hunzeker.
The performances are as follows: Tuesday November 17th at 7:30pm in the HSHS auditorium. Wednesday November 18th is Panhandle Conference at Crawford. Monday November 23rd at 7:30pm in Rushville at the Plains Theater. The next to last is on December 1 which is Districts at Potter-Dix. State will be on December 10th. There will also be a performance at the school on November 23 at 3pm.
I asked the cast members to give me their opinions on One Act and here is what they said. Most of them said that One Act was very fun except for when you have to get up very early in the morning to go to practice, and a few of the boys said that it is only fun some of the time. I got a wide variety of answers for why they are in One Act, some of them said that they wanted to try something new. Some said it’s because they like to act and two said that they are doing it because Mrs. Flick asked them to and it was the same play as last year’s all school play and they wanted the same part. A few of the cast members said that they will not be doing One Act next year for various reasons such as they are graduating or they just don’t want to. Most of the cast said that they will do it again next year but it just depends on what the play is. One of the cast members said that she has made a few friends from their competitions but everyone else just said that they have not met anyone that they did not already know, or that they have not been to any yet. Of course everyone said YES!!! when I asked them if they were excited for this year’s performances. They all said that they like the choice of play this year. One member said that she would have liked to have done a different play because she was in the performance last year, but she is happy with it anyway.
We wish the One Act all the best in their performances and hope that you make it all the way to state.

Hey! Get to work!

What is the After School Program? Well it’s a place where students can go to get tutored or just finish homework. It’s available Monday through Friday 3:30 to 6. There are certified teachers on the spot to help. It’s here to provide every student the ability to succeed; it’s for everyone K-12.

Mr. Frank And Mr. Pummel came up with ASP. Mr. Frank said “I got the idea from the old school I used to work at when I was assistant principal.” This can be a very helping environment, and you can get a lot of help and work done by going to it. When you are in the program there is absolutely no talking or you have to stay longer. It is a place for studying, not for visiting. It is now required for ineligible students. For every D it’s a half hour, for every F it’s one hour.

So think about it, you could be outside instead of inside doing work that you otherwise wouldn’t have to do if you weren’t ineligible. So by being in there ASP. helps you to finish your work so you aren’t ineligible.

Gymnastics for the brain

The Challenge

The Prize!

“The answer is 5.63 cubic inches.” This is an answer that you might get if you try Mr.Planansky’s math question of the week.
Mr. Planansky started the math question of the week as part of a professional improvement program that he and Mr.Newbold are in. The first question was in mid September and has gone on strong for a couple months now. He gets some questions from the professional program and others from old math competition tests. If you win the first prize you get a one dollar coin, some are of James Polk. Second through fifth places gets bonus points in a math class of your choice. He has had one surprise when in the very first week a 6th grader , Austin R. used a very unique approach and got it right. As Mr. Planansky would say, the math question is “gymnastics for the brain.”
